This was memory, not research. If anyone sees errors in this discourse, please
revise. It's funny the trivial things that I remember versus the important
things I forget. I do sometimes forge fabricated facts into my head that aren't
true and my family or friends have to pound those inaccuracies out of me. I
come into the land of truth screaming and kicking (and usually swearing like
all good 25 year residents of NYC/Brooklyn).
I do remember quite well that Chet (the Jet--or Chester, as the local media
often called him) graduated from Bradley in 1962. Laverne Tart hung out at the
ChiRho house (the protestant center) where I met my ex wife. He was a charmer
(the bad boy of the ABA--remember that league and their red, white and blue
ball--was that right?). I think that he graduated in 1964, right after the big
NIT win against New Mexico (36 point win). Laverne was named MVP of that years
NIT if I remember correctly. Laverne was the star of the Long Island Nets
(remember them, later the NJ Nets) just before Dr. J became the phenomenon that
he became.
Hey, what a career path! At least it progressed upward rather than sideways (or
in my case occasionally downward).
