Margaret (and all):
I don't remember anyone getting close to our 1959 team until Springfield
beat our flu'ish team. I remember mostly 20 point plus wins. In 1971-72 I
had one of the starting forwards from that Springfield team rooming in my
house (we had both just divorced--after I sold that house and left town, it
burned down--the secrets it could reveal!). I never discussed that game
with him. It sounds like many of us never got over the 1959 state playoffs.
It's good to hear that when I tell the story of the team that should have
been first, that I'm not the only one who remembers the flu that fell the
giants from Central. Wasn't that Dawdy Hawkin's last year at PHS? I
remember watching Dawdy win two titles at Pekin (with rather short
squads--remember the Cobden [sp?] AppleKnockers [sp?]?).
One of the guards from that 1959 Central team went to Dartmouth and
transferred back to Bradley to become a starting guard on BU's and Chuck
Orsborne's last great team (NIT champions of 1964). That's a team that
would have spoiled John Wooden's string. But that's a story for my fellow
BU alums.
