Sandy, you're right-the more memories you read, the more that get triggered in
your mind. I found it especially interesting to read about all the Steak,
Hunt's, A&W, memories but no one yet has mentioned Hunter's-remember the
popcorn, hot dog place you could drive-up and order from a walk-up window
(forerunner of the now popular drive-thru?) I remember that was a favorite
meeting place for guys after dropping off a Friday night date- you could also
get a Daily Racing Forum there if I recall, but I'm not sure all that was legal
back then-maybe the lawyers of the class could enlighten us on that.
There was also a mention of Harry Whitaker in one of the memories; I recall
when "Bones" Whitaker was the varsity baseball coach who always
coached third base during the games wearing that heavy wool uniform over a
frail body and all the "bench buddies" (of which I was one) waiting
anxiously for that perfect March wind to send him airborne!! I also remember
Larry Rager's screaming line shot foul balls down the third base line almost
taking his head off-if only Larry could have straightened those out....
For all you ex-track jocks out there, who remembers the crumbling concrete
seats around Herke Field's cinder track? I swear you would sink at least three
inches into the cinders on the track facing St. Cecilia's School!
There was also a lot of memories noted about cars, so here's a test-who
remembers "Penelope"? I need make, model. and year. (adipeo@mtco.com
you're disqualified)!
Keep the memories flowing!!
