Great story, Lee. Maybe you should tell this one at party. Corky will be there. I think there could be a lot of stories of Corky fuming. I think everyone was afraid of him. I still am.

Bruce---It was good to hear that you too have some memories of the freshman baseball team coached by Corky Robertson. There's one incident I'll never forget:

We were playing at Richwoods and were ahead in about the fourth inning, but rain was threatening, so Corky wanted to let Richwoods have their at-bats, so we could move the game along and get the win if we got enough innings played. But nobody was cooperating. Our batters kept getting on base through walks, errors, hits, whatever. So, as I was walking up to the plate to take my turn, Corky stopped me, looked right into my eyes and articulated very clearly, "STRIKE OUT." I nodded, stepped up to the plate and because I was so relaxed by his command, I hit the first pitch way over the right fielder's head for a sure home run (my only home run ever in high school). I remember wondering as I was rounding the bases, "How am I going to deal with this once I touch home?" And I actually remember thinking as I headed toward third that maybe I shouldn't turn but just keep running off the field.

Anyway, as I walked over to our silent bench after touching home, there were no congrats and Rocky Carter just said, "You were supposed to strike out," and then rolled his laughing eyes towards Corky who was squatting, fuming, in the first base coach's box. I don't remember what happened after that, but that's the way things always seem to go with me--no such thing as a free lunch.
