Laraine,

I enjoyed your list of memories.

Lots of you are talking about driving and cars, and I'll add my memory of getting my driver's licence finally. I say finally, because I was one of the youngest in the class (birthdate December 22). Some of the girls I hung around with were almost a year older, and thus had their drivers' licenses for months and months before I did. Finally, my birthday arrived, and the only thing I wanted was my driver's license. Now, I had somehow missed Drivers Ed, but was a good observer of watching other people drive -- plus secretly I had driven someone's car before having a license (actually, I'm shocked I did this, because my daughter calls me Goodie Two Shoes when I was young). First I had to wait until Christmas was over, then it had the nerve to snow! Finally, in early January sometime, Mom took me down to try my driver's test. I took the eye exam, and yes, I would have to wear glasses while driving -- but I didn't wear my glasses all the time then. I went out in the car to test drive with some man, and returned to the testing office. He told me he had to fail me -- I was so nervous, I had forgotten to put on my glasses! And he had the nerve to drive with me!! Yes, I got my license on my second try easily maybe 2 weeks later, and I'm sure I never forgot again to put on my glasses behind the wheel.

Talking about driving, I remember then using my Grandad's car, maybe a '53 Chevie, once. There were no turn signals yet -- one had to crank down the window and stick out a hand to signal! Certainly, there were no seat belts.

Guess what! I just realized that being perhaps one of the youngest in our class, I now have the advantage 40 years later! I'm "only" 57!!

Why isn't our President of our class, Darmon Kuntz, commenting on anything, and why aren't you signed up to attend the reunion, Darmon? I thought you only lived around the Chicago area, not so far away.

Cheers,
Susie Hampy Lentz
