I know I had a good time at our festivities this weekend because on Sunday I
had the after party "downer". I usually don't allow myself that luxury, but
in this case I was testing myself to see if this idea of getting immersed in
a reunion was worthwhile. In New York in particular you will find many
people who have escaped their small town (or medium, or even large town)
beginnings to join in anonymous living in the big, ever so significant
city. There are those who will put down the idea of reaching back to a
period as painful as high school. I know it was painful (somewhere back in
my mind), but fortunately I don't remember any of those details. I remember
the fun, the good times, and the spirit of the age.
The e-mails were key to my experience. That is where I read so many similar
and familiar stories. That's where I found out how accomplished and sharp
my classmates are! I sometimes felt I was in the middle of a "Twins
Separated at Birth, Raised in Separate Countries" story. I'm sure that
there are a lot of areas that we (as individuals) would disagree upon;
however, I saw a lot of similar thinking in those e-mails. Larraine Wessels
and Todd Marshall made a huge contribution to my experience. Let me not
forget Larry Norton's nudging and cheerleading. Did anybody buy Dave
Weissert his well deserved beer?
I am very proud of our class (all of you) and was ecstatic to introduce my
wife to as many of you as we could manage in the limited time frame. She
was impressed. She read every word of Joe Hanlon's "memoir" and thoroughly
scoured Todd's web site. I think that she knows that she got somebody
special (in me) having met the people I grew up with (oops another damn
preposition).
I had no idea the contribution that Patty and Terry Fuchs were making until
I (we) arrived at their house Friday night. Keep in mind, this was scary!
If Friday night goes badly (for me) the weekend could go from bad to worse!
The pressure was on. We opened the front door and the first thing I saw was
Terry Fuchs smiling from ear to ear with a welcome on his face that said
"you're among friends here". Within two minutes Patty welcomed us. I was
in heaven and I'm afraid that for the first time in Sharon's and my 30 year
(almost) marriage I didn't pay appropriate attention to her. She hasn't
complained.
For those of you who were at Terry and Patty's, did you notice how
professionally they ran that event? The food and drink were always in order
and they still managed to talk to everyone. The balloon signs, the parking
markers, they didn't miss a beat. Sharon and I have enjoyed throwing
parties in the past and hope to in Peoria (when the renovation settles
down). We should have taken notes.
Saturday night was everything it could be (at least from my view). It just
didn't last long enough. There just isn't enough time.
Love, Dave
